History
Lefkada has a rich history dating back to ancient times, when the Corinthians transformed it into an island by digging a canal in the 7th century BC. Over the centuries, it was ruled by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, French, and British, each leaving their mark on the island. During British rule, important infrastructure improvements were made, while the island also played a role in supporting Greece during Ottoman occupation. Lefkada has inspired notable writers such as Lafcadio Hearn and Angelos Sikelianos. In 1864, the island was united with the modern Greek state. Today, Lefkada preserves its heritage through traditional villages, historic landmarks, and a unique cultural identity.
